Ending last year as the top goal scoring defensemen, Green – or Game Over as his fans call him – is known for his powerhouse shot.  In fact, Game Over’s slap shot once broke an opposing defenseman’s protective cup and almost ruptured a testicle!   Such a strong player must have been sorely missed by the club when he suffered a concussion, but the Caps fared just fine.  Now, after a month out of the game and a month of great playing by the rest of the team, where will Green fit in?  Can Game Over find his game in time for the playoffs, after being off the ice for a month?  If the Capitals want to make a long playoff run, they really need their Green to be running on all cylinders.

The Capital’s have also had to do without Goalie Semyon Varlamov, who was put off by a knee injury, but again, they have done okay without him.  Michal Neuvirth and rookie Braden Holtby have kept the net guarded, with Holtby contributing significantly to Washington’s success.  Holtby was named the first star of the week on March 14, stopped twenty pucks during a shootout against Tampa, achieved two shut outs and a .965 save percentage since being called up. Unfortunately for Holtby – and unfortunately for the Caps – three goalies are one too many and in light of Varlamov’s return, Holtby has been sent back down to Hershey.

After three huge successful seasons and three early departures in the NHL playoffs, the Capitals are eager to go the distance this year.  With Ovechkin – the third highest goal scorer in the league – and Backstom – the fourth highest goal scorer in the league, the Capitals have stats on their side for sure.  That said, how will the recent returns of Green and Varlamov impact the team and their standings?
