Simon Says…… entertainment and fun
This is a blog about fun thrills, entertainment and generally enjoying life to the fullest.
Take a look at any mixed martial arts rankings of the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world and most if not all of them will have UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at No. 1. “The Spider” has won 12 fights in a row – last loss in January 2006 to Yushin Okami — and all 11 of his UFC bouts. His bout against Chael Sonnen is the main event at Saturday’s UFC 117 from Oakland, Calif.
Silva (26-4-0) enters off an odd unanimous decision victory over Demian Maia at UFC 112. It was odd because while Silva did land plenty of punches and kicks, he spent most of the bout dancing around the Octagon and taunting Maia rather than actually engaging him. UFC president Dana White was furious and threatened to release Silva from the organization if he had similar antics in his next bout, which of course is this one. Silva has never been an underdog at Bodog’s Online Sportsbook during his 11-fight UFC career, and he is currently -525 against Sonnen after opening at -450, where he stayed until recently. Because Silva is usually so heavily favored, bettors tend to parlay him with other bouts to increase the payout of the wager. And that has been the case here, so even though Sonnen is getting the slight majority of action on the line we moved Silva to -525 after last week’s UFC on Versus 2 as 53% of all the parlays are still live after that event.
No. 1 middleweight contender Sonnen (24-10-1) is on a three-fight winning streak, the last victory coming at UFC 109 with a unanimous decision over Nate Marquardt. Sonnen’s last loss came to the same Maia whom Silva just toyed with. But Sonnen also beat Okami at UFC at 104 – in fairness, Silva didn’t technically get beaten by Okami (he has never officially lost in the Octagon) but was disqualified because of an illegal kick.
And Sonnen has been talking trash for months about Silva.
“I’ve beat the champion of every company except for the UFC,” said Sonnen, a very skilled wrestler who could have the advantage on the ground. “I’ve accomplished far more in this sport than Anderson Silva.”
And: “I just don’t like him. That’s it,” Sonnen said. “I don’t offer an apology and I don’t need to give an explanation. We can’t all get along. I’m going to take his belt on [Saturday] and Dana’s going to fire him on [Sunday].”
Silva, who has drawn some criticism in his career for lacking passion, has kept mostly quiet but promises to bring his “A game” on Saturday.
Sonnen is currently at +350, but he is getting approximately 55 percent of the handle to Silva’s 45 percent on the line on that fight; the main event is drawing better than 31.30 percent of the total betting handle for the entire UFC 117 card. Sonnen is used to being an underdog because he has been at Bodog in each of his four previous UFC fights and in six of his seven total fights offered at the site. But Sonnen has paid out nicely for players during his three-fight winning streak, going off at +375 against Marquardt, +250 against Okami and +185 vs. Dan Miller at UFC 98.
Of course Bodog will offer several props for UFC 117 – those will be available on Thursday. The “who will win Fight of the Night” generally is the most-bet prop with about 50 percent of the total prop action.
And as of this writing one of the undercard fights is actually seeing more total action than Silva-Sonnen if you throw out parlay action. That would be Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch, currently with Alves at Even and Fitch at -130. This bout accounts for 31.76 percent of the total card. Alves, who hasn’t fought since losing to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100 last July, is getting 57.30 percent of the total handle. Alves (16-6-0) lost to Fitch via TKO back at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 5 in the summer of 2006. Fitch (22-3-0) hasn’t been beaten since also losing to St. Pierre, that at UFC 87 by unanimous decision. Because bettors seem to think should be a very competitive fight, it is drawing more two-sided action than Silva-Sonnen.

DC council to vote online gambling repeal today; Hawaii gambling opponent wants away with wagering; AC mobile gambling vote passes
The full DC council will be voting on repealing the nation?s first government-sponsored online gambling program during the legislative session today. A report by The Washington Post states several council members have raised concerns that online gambling was legalised last year but the program was never implemented. So far, eight of the 12 council members are up for repealing online gambling, but it?s not all bad. Many of those admit they are open to the concept if it?s introduced again as a standalone bill. Hawaii?s gambling opponent – university professor John Kindt – has voiced his opinions on anti-wagering in the state, taking his views to the capital.Backed by Honolulu?s police and mayor, HawaiiNewsNow reported he made a statement at the State Capital Rotunda saying how he wants the legalising of online gambling kept out of the state. “Gambling is a lose-lose in particular for Hawaii because it’s an island economy,” he said. “There’s nowhere for the gambling to go except internally in raiding the public coffers and raiding the local populace.” However, Sen. Malama Solomon has her head screwed on, and disagrees with Kindt. She said she supports some gambing as it could generate up to $600 million in annual revenue and help fund Native Hawaiian programs and create jobs. “We can start to really look at increasing our revenues to be able to support the kind of services that are demanded by our residents as well as lower their tax burden,” she said. As reported yesterdaythe vote fortwo bills ? one which would allow Atlantic City punters to bet from remote gambling locations using mobile devices, and the other which would offer multimillion-dollar tax breaks for nongaming development – went ahead last night. As a result of the meeting, both bills cleared the state Senate and will now go to the full Senate for a vote. Attorney Joseph Tyrell, who represents the Casino Association of New Jersey, said: “This is an exciting area we need to address, and New Jersey can be the forefront.” Lawmakers also approved several amendments to the original bills, including one which would give the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority the right to regulate noise in the Tourism District. PPA slams Mitt Romney in internet poker -misperception?
Poker players? lobbying group, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), has lashed out at Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney declaring he?s not properly educated on internet poker legislation. The group?s denouncement came after Romney said in an interview with 8newsnow that he ?doesn?t support legalising online gaming? because of ?the social costs and people?s addictive gambling habits?. PPA?s Executive Director, John Pappas, said in a statement to Poker site PoketFives that ?Governor Romney?s statement seems to be based on a misperception of regulation and the status quo.? With Romney recently winning the Nevada?s vote by a 70% landslide – heading Republican runner Newt Gingrich (23%), who is also opposed to online gambling, and poker player favourite Texas Congressman Ron Paul (19%)- he has now become Republican challenger for President Barack Obama in the November election (much to the dread of gamblers hoping to see the legalising of online wagering). Unfortunately for poker players, the results demonstrate it?s quite unlikely the industry?s champion, Ron Paul, could get the vote ? it would make more sense for voters to stick with poker-neutral Democrat Obama. Nevertheless, PPA Executive Vice President of Player Relations, Rich Muny, further supported the group?s argument that Romney isn?t fit for the job, stating: ?I believe Romney has it wrong here. Licensing and regulation will ensure that age verification measures are implemented, consumer protections are provided, and protections for those with excessive gaming habits are mandated. Current law does not provide any protections for anyone.? As a result, the PPA has now insisted poker players make use of their Twitter and Facebook accounts and make their issues known to U.S. presidential candidates Romney and Santorum. Poker pro: marketing suicide?
Few things in online poker?s short history have remained the same for long including the pecking order on player liquidity which has seen the lead change hands four times in just over 10 years. However, the marketing of ?professional? players as brand ambassadors has been a dominating strategy for some time. Such players were billed as having an extra talent that others didn?t possess and then the marketing people turned them into celebrities in the hope the brand would be swept long in their wake. Previous to the recent revelations, even the ever forthright poker forums would take enormous exception to suggestions that the big name pros were anything other than just that. Sadly, as the smoke clears from the horrendous business failures in the online poker industry of the past year it is increasingly obvious that the biggest poker celebrities were in fact unable to pay debts or cheated to ?win? their tag as a poker professional. The latest examples of Phil Ivey and Erick Lindgren thought to be owing $4,000,000 each paints a very different picture to that of the clever, aspirational characters the marketers sold us. Even the ?pro?s pro?, Barry Greenstein, has admitted that he is unable to pay around $400,000 of debt for many years. The poker pros have also often been vocal about how poker should be run and some have even tried ventures of their own, in almost every case the result has been the same and the list is a long one including; Phil Laak (Unabomber), Dave Ulliot (Devilfishpoker), Doyle Brunson (Doyle?sRoom) and to certain extent FullTilt itself. While we don?t pretend for a second we envisioned this personal implosion of the poker pros when the Bodog Poker Network first started working on the Recreational Poker Model back in 2009 one of the first realisations was that the players we wanted to attract knew they were never going to become ?pros?. Indeed, they did even not aspire to be one. As a result we started looking for people who really represented our brand best. Yup, pretty girls, still work! The most recent addition to the Bodog team, Tatjana Pasalic, is not just a pretty face though. She knows poker and poker people but she is also approachable and friendly unlike most of the recently discredited ?celebrity? names of the past. What is now evident is the gravy train that was the ?sponsored pro? is coming to an end. Many of those that still enjoy a sponsorship are at very reduced amounts and even some of the best players in the world, even those without debt skeletons, like Phil Helmuth, remain unsponsored. Of course, we have seen a dramatic drop in the value of ?pro? players as TV programmes with huge audiences in the US are no longer viable and poker rooms realise they don?t drive the right kind of revenue, if any at all. They simply suck money out of the eco-system. Poker marketing looks to have changed forever and once again we will see a reinvention of how the game is sold to a more mainstream audience. Once again there will be winners and losers and (once again) it will be fascinating to see whose strategy wins out. Poker News
