Ohio University might be the most unlikely conference champion in the NCAA Tournament, as the Bobcats won the MAC tourney as a ninth seed and their reward is Big East power Georgetown on Thursday night in a Midwest Region first-round game in Providence, R.I. The Hoyas have opened as 13.5-point favorites on bodog’s bodog.com/sports-betting/ncaa-college-basketball.jsp” target=”_blank”>college basketball odds.

No. 14 seed Ohio (21-14, 18-12 ATS) is in its 12th NCAA Tournament but first since 2005. The Bobcats are 4-12 all time in the Big Dance. They are led this year by MAC Tournament MVP Armon Bassett (a former Indiana player), who averaged a whopping 41.3 minutes and 29.0 points in the four conference tournament games, breaking the conference record for points in a tournament in one season. Freshman guard D.J. Cooper is Robin to Bassett’s Batman, with Cooper finishing second on the team in scoring this season (13.1 ppg) to go with 5.9 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game. Ohio plays an up-tempo style and enters the NCAAs on a five-game winning streak, which is a season high. In its only game against an opponent in common with Georgetown, the Bobcats fell to Pittsburgh, 74-49, on Dec. 12.

No. 3 Georgetown (23-10, 17-12 ATS) was slumping in the second half of the season but found itself in the Big East Tournament with three wins in three days (including an upset of Syracuse) before running out of gas in the final against West Virginia. Junior guard Austin Freeman, who revealed late in the season he had diabetes, leads the Hoyas in scoring at 16.7 ppg. But big man Greg Monroe is the true difference-maker on this team, and he played very well in the Big East tournament. Ohio figures to have no answer for him. But other than Freeman, Monroe and Chris Wright, the Hoyas don’t have much else, so the Bobcats might try to run them out of the gym.

Ohio and Georgetown have never played. The winner advances meets the winner of sixth-seeded Tennessee and 11th-seeded San Diego State on Saturday.
